UMBSM has ordered a new research vessel to replace our smaller vessel, RV Aplysia. The new vessel will be named RV Actinia (After the beadlet anemone common on the shores of Cumbrae). The University Marine Biological Station Millport (University of London) will be the Owners of the vessel. Her main rĂ´les will be taking students out to sea, hydrographic and benthic sampling, trawling, creeling, surveying and providing a platform for scientific divers. RV Actinia has been designed by Macduff Ship Design. The vessel is based on a Gemini Workboats' 11 m displacement catamaran hull and is being built to the requirements of the MCA Small Commercial Vessel and Pilot Boat Code of Practice for operation in Category 3 waters (up to 20 miles from a safe haven). The vessel is to be of GRP catamaran construction with transom sterns and raked partial soft-nose stems. Wheelhouse accommodation is to be provided for a crew of two with LSA for a total complement of 14 persons. RV Actinia is to be certified by the Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors (SCMS) as a workboat. At the time of writing, the hull has been fabricated and transported to the Seaway yard at Macduff for completion and fitting out.
