R/V GYRE, built for the U. S. Navy by Halter Marine Services of New Orleans, Louisiana, was launched in mid-1973 and commenced research operations in early 1974. The vessel was extensively remodeled in 1980-84 with the addition of a new deckhouse. GYRE is a general-purpose, open-ocean research ship.
