Polarfuchs was modernized and refitted for the special needs of the IFM-GEOMAR service and integrated into the research vessel fleet of the Institute on November 28th, 1997. Now it sails under the official flag of Schleswig-Holstein. Its new assignment is to serve as a platform for nearshore investigation of all research devisions of the IFM-GEOMAR and other Kiel University departments. Polarfuchs was planned as a laboratory crAfter and has facilities for research work (A-Frame at stern for instruments and fishing gear, 2 winches for 250 m wire (6mm) and 350 kg each, a small winch (6 mm, 80, 100 kg) and a mulitpurpose lab under deck).
